During the years of occupation, the Germans had outposts on the island to oversee the surrounding area. One day a wedding took place in Ligiades. The custom at the weddings was to raise a Greek flag. The Germans saw this and their leader ordered them to kill the inhabitants. They went up the mountain, put the women and children in the house and burned the houses with them inside. They slaughtered the men and raised the German flag.
