Good Friday is characterized by the release of the statues of the Sacred Mysteries which represent the passion and death of Jesus Christ. This ritual dates back to Spanish domination. Since the eighteenth century the Procession of the Mysteries of Vallisa was very famous. Another procession started from the church of San Gregorio, near the Basilica of San Nicola. Quarrels often arose between the two congregations because each wanted to excel over the other and so at a certain point it was decided that the Mysteries of Vallisa should come out in even years and those of St. Gregory in odd years.
