We all pass under the Angevin Arch when, exiting the Basilica of San Nicola, we enter the Old City. If, however, we turn, once passed, we see the image of the patron of Bari.
This reminded everyone that they entered an area where there was legal immunity. Entering the Nicolaiana Citadel in fact, we placed ourselves under the protection of the Saint and enjoyed immunity both with respect to religious and civil authority. The arch is so called because it was made by King Charles of Anjou.
