On the east pier stood a church dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate. During an incursion by the Saracens, the people of Bari implored them not to desecrate that sacred place full of treasures donated to the miraculous saint. But the Saracens ran to plunder it. But when they were already at the door, a terrible storm broke out: the sea rose and swallowed everything. From that moment, the islet on which the church stood disappeared.
In its place a large shoal formed, dangerous for mariners.
Over the centuries there have been many shipwrecks and even today fishermen say that when there are storms from Monte Rosso you can hear the tolling of the bell of the disappeared sanctuary.
