A long time ago, the inhabitants of Bari brought the bones of San Nicola to a city on a cart pulled by two oxen, but they did not know where to build a new church to keep them. Legend has it that the oxen stopped and knelt in front of the Palazzo del Catapano and no longer wanted to get up.
For the people of Bari it was God who indicated the place where to build a large Basilica for San Nicola. For this, in front of the portal of the Basilica, there are the sculptures of two oxen.
