When I was a child, we spent our time playing in the neighborhoods of Ioannina around Independence Street. Gambetas, a typical figure of Ioannina with his belly, baldness and walking stick, also lived nearby, in Chania. Many people from Giannina called him Saint Gambetas and he used it. We used to approach him and ask “Saint Gambettas, the word Saint, how do you spell it with small or capital s”. He would then take his walking stick and start chasing us.
